AIRLIE PRIMARY SCHOOL, KIRRIEMUIR, ANGUS

As part of Angus Council’s commitment to enhance educational provision for pupils in the rural reas of the county, Airlie Primary School was earmarked for extensive redevelopment to bring it up to a standard commensurate with 21st century teaching and learning.

Commissioned in October 2007, this project involved a comprehensive program of demolition, refurbishment and extension of the existing school as well as the design and construction of a new dining and multi-purpose hall with associated kitchen servery, changing facilities and toilets. The first phase consisted of the demolition of the existing dining hall and its foundations along with the removal of sub-standard previous additions.

The brief for the design of the new development included the provision of three classrooms and a nursery along with an ICT suite and resources centre appropriate for modern teaching methods. Improved thermal insulation, in excess of current building standards, helps to provide a comfortable learning environment and care was taken to ensure that the carbon footprint was kept to a minimum through the use of low embodied energy materials.
