Stirling Council Adult Social Care Department appointed Wellwood Leslie to undertake lead consultant and architectural services for the replacement of their Torbrex House special needs unit.. The brief called for the demolition of the outdated building and the provision of a new, state-of-the-art development that should appear like contemporary mainstream housing. The development comprises eight flats and three family houses. The flats provide a range of accommodation options, ranging from one bedroom for one person, to two person two bedroom shared flats and a respite care and assessment flat. There is also a staff hub unit, which is used as a base to provide full time support and care to the residents. The three houses, each with suitable accommodation for five people, have private gardens and car parking within their own curtilage.
The development is highly insulated and fitted with Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery Systems (MVHR), far exceeding current regulations but in line with the needs of the users.
