As part of the Library and Learning Centre project to move to RFID book tagging and automated issue and return of books, Wellwood Leslie were commissioned to create a new staff/user interface for the library to replace the outmoded desk based model. The University sought a softer, more retail type feel for the space with a range of for users to engage with staff to seek help and assistance. Wellwood Leslie developed a scheme with a strong visual identity complementing the Library and Learning Centre branding. Services included liaison with the RFID specialist contractor, furniture design and specification, lighting design and signage.
Carefully selected furniture has been incorporated into the scheme to offer a range of options to support staff/user engagement. “Bus Stop” units allow for standing conversations or for perching on a high bench or stool. Low seating on sofas or individual chairs supports longer engagements and provides an accessible alternative for users.
Construction was undertaken in a restricted period during the summer recess of 2010 and was completed in 4 weeks.
