As part of the campus wide NetComms project Wellwood Leslie were commissioned to design the CER II building to accommodate fibre termination equipment, data servers and telecomms switches to support the VOIP telecoms system installed throughout the University.
The new facility was formed by alteration and extension to a former nursery building which had previously been used as a computer suite during the first generation of computer development. Working to a tightly defined brief developed by the University’s telecoms consultants a design was developed to provide a hardened, secure, fire resistant box within which all equipment is housed. Outwith the secure area all necessary plant rooms are located to services the CER space. Particular attention was given to the accommodation of air conditioning plant required to maintain effective temperatures in the equipment rooms. All a/c plant is located on a deck at first floor level with large air intakes and extracts required to allow the plant t o operate whilst taking account of acoustic limitations set by proximity to adjacent domestic properties. The completed building blends into the Springfield conservation are with its slate roof and smooth render finishes.
