Ethie Castle

Ethie Castle is a category A listed building dating from the early 16th century, located north west of Arbroath in Angus. The castle sits within generous well developed garden grounds with three further listed buildings - two listed in category B and one in category C.

The building has historical importance due to its connections to Arbroath Abbey and Cardinal Beaton, and the Earls of Northesk who held the castle from the 16th century until 1928. Architecturally, it contains interesting fabric and architectural details from the 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries - with the combined architectural form being of an attractive composition set within a well designed and maintained garden context.

Wellwood Leslie were appointed to undertake a phased strategy of refurbishment, allowing a number of the rooms within the castle to be brought back into meaningful use and to extend its capabilities as bed and breakfast accommodation.

Conservation works included careful refurbishment of both sash & case & lead work windows, replacement of lead dormers, careful repairs and refurbishment of timber panelling and stonework, installation of en-suites and erection of a new timber garage.
