Wellwood Leslie has developed extensive experience within the golf and leisure sector, shaped by long term, trusted collaboration with some of the most influential organisations in the sport. Led by Business Partners, Neil Simpson, and Stephen McPhail, our team brings extensive specialist expertise, strategic insight and a proud track record of delivering complex, high-profile projects for world-renowned clubs and governing bodies.

Our journey within the golf & leisure sector began with the design of the Carnoustie Golf Course Hotel, created to support the successful hosting of the 1999 Open Championship at Carnoustie Links. This landmark project introduced us to the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and The R&A, the governing body for the sport, which opened the door to a long-standing partnership that continues to this day.

What began as a series of smaller commissions soon evolved into major refurbishment and redevelopment work across the R&A estate. We delivered the sensitive restoration of Waldon House, the Club’s historic dormy house, followed by the multi-phased transformation of the R&A Clubhouse itself. Most recently the remodelling and extension of the basement locker rooms has strengthened our reputation for combining heritage sensitivity with modern functionality.

Further refurbishment work at Forgan House and substantial projects for The R&A companies, including those responsible for the Open Championship, Rules and Golf Development, has broadened our role within the sport. One of our flagship achievements is Allan Robertson House at Kingsbarns Golf Links, a state-of-the-art facility providing equipment testing laboratories, archive storage and specialist human and robot club and ball testing bays.

Beyond the R&A, we have advised leading clubs such as Royal Lytham & St Annes, Royal Liverpool, Valderrama, and a wide range of established Scottish clubs. Our work includes new facilities at Kingsbarns, The Golf House Club Elie, The Berkshire in Surrey and many others. The expansion of the Wellwood Leslie Group in 2017 further strengthened our sector expertise, adding significant clubhouse developments for East Kilbride and Helensburgh Golf Clubs.

Recent highlights include our return to Carnoustie as part of the design team for the Carnoustie Halfway House and the New Golf Club at St Andrews - continuing our commitment to creating world - class golf environments.

Currently, under the leadership of Neil Simpson, we are actively engaged with the R&A Headquarters Project, which will consolidate it’s operations to a single site in St Andrews.
